Steve Aggergaard practices in the areas of commercial and nonprofit litigation, professional liability, intellectual property, and appellate law.  His clients include corporations, individuals, educators, churches, and media communicators.

He is licensed in Minnesota and Wisconsin, practices regularly in the Minnesota Court of Appeals, and has authored several briefs to the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Steve has extensive expertise in sexual abuse defense, 42 U.S.C. § 1983 litigation, and areas in which the civil, criminal, and appellate law intersect. In 2016, he was appointed a Special Assistant Minnesota Public Defender to represent a criminal defendant in his appeal. Steve also has incorporated a prior 15-year journalism career into his law practice on issues involving the First Amendment, defamation, and privacy.

In 2016, his article “When Public Space Isn’t Public,” which analyzed speech rights in shopping malls, was chosen as the best article of 2015 in Bench & Bar of Minnesota, the magazine of the Minnesota State Bar Association. In 2016, he was chosen Chairperson of the State Bar Association’s Publications Committee.

Steve has been a frequent media source himself, particularly on First Amendment and privacy issues, appearing on air and in publications ranging from the Star Tribune to the UK’s DailyMail.com.

Steve received his law degree cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. He was a law clerk for the Honorable Sam Hanson of the Minnesota Supreme Court and for the Honorable Paul Magnuson of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.  Steve also holds a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and a bachelor’s degree from Augsburg College in Minneapolis.

Steve has   sung with the VocalEssence Chorus since 2004 and in 2016, was named to the VocalEssence Board of Directors. He has run several marathons, including the Boston Marathon three times.
