Biography
Andrew Hunstad is a highly respected Minnesota divorce and family law attorney with more than a decade of experience guiding clients through complex and high-stakes family law matters. His practice focuses on divorces involving high-net-worth estates, closely held businesses, non-marital asset claims, hidden or undisclosed assets, novel financial and property issues, disproportionate incomes, significant marital debt, and the division of complex retirement assets through Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs).
Andrew provides strategic legal counsel to business owners, executives, professionals, and their spouses facing intricate financial, retirement, and custody issues. He regularly assists clients with the preparation, review, and implementation of QDROs involving pensions, 401(k)s, and other qualified retirement plans, ensuring retirement assets are divided accurately and efficiently. Andrew has represented entrepreneurs, C-suite and D-suite executives, public figures, and professionals with medium- to high-net-worth estates, as well as their spouses. He is well-versed in the nuances of business valuation, income analysis, spousal maintenance (alimony), tracing non-marital property claims, and retirement asset division.
Andrew’s strength lies not only in litigation and negotiation, but also in his attention to detail and deep understanding of financial matters. He genuinely enjoys the math involved in complex asset, retirement, and income analyses, and he takes pride in providing precise, data-informed legal advice.
Andrew is a serious student of the law. He closely follows appellate decisions, reviewing new opinions from the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court each week, and prioritizes understanding statutory amendments as soon as they are signed into law, not just when they take effect. His legal knowledge is thorough, current, and deeply informed by both case law and legislative developments. But Andrew’s role isn’t to theorize or preach about the law, it’s to apply it and advocate for his clients. He helps clients understand how the law intersects with the specific facts of their case and provides clear, competent, and practical legal advice. This empowers his clients to make well-informed decisions about their finances, retirement security, their families, and their futures.
In addition to divorce litigation, Andrew frequently represents clients in post-decree proceedings, child custody disputes, parenting time matters, child support modifications, domestic abuse protective orders, and retirement division enforcement. He also drafts and negotiates antenuptial and postnuptial agreements tailored to his clients’ unique needs. Whether negotiating a fair and dignified settlement, or advocating in court, Andrew is a strong, strategic voice for his clients. He is a skilled communicator, empathetic listener, and problem-solver who helps clients move forward with clarity, confidence, and financial security.

“He had my back through the entire process.”
“Feeling lost, with the pending divorce after 19 years of marriage, I reached out to Andrew T. Hunstad…. He gave me the best advice: ” Get a good therapist because I am not. But I am an excellent attorney.” He had my back through the entire process. And that was worth every dollar I spent.”
“Finding someone who can explain the law, communicate my concerns, and deliver made it easier.”
“A friend recommended I talk with Andrew Hunstad after my first attorney stopped communicating with me. I decided to hire him to take over my case.. Andrew was very professional and responsive to my calls and emails. From the beginning, Andrew listened to me. I told him what was important to me and he did not forget. Divorce is not much fun but finding someone who can explain the law, communicate my concerns, and deliver made it easier. Take my advice, talk to him before you hire anyone else.”
