- This webinar will be a deep dive into the Minnesota Debt Fairness Act and its sweeping changes to debt collection practices in Minnesota. Jessica Klander and her esteemed panel of professionals will unpack the critical provisions of the new law, including expanded definitions of a “collecting party,” tighter wage garnishment rules, and the end of spousal liability for medical debt. They will explore the added consumer disclosures that are now required and the real-world challenges creditors face as the implementation date approaches on October 1, 2024. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the legislative drivers behind the Act from people who represented the industry during the legislative session. Jessica Klander is the chief operating officer at Bassford Remele and the co-chair of the Consumer Finance Practice Group. Her practice focuses on defending lawyers, financial entities, healthcare providers, and other organizations against consumer financial protection claims, malpractice, and professional liability claims. In particular, she counsels organizations on privacy, data security, and governmental and regulatory affairs. She advises and represents health care organizations, collection agencies, and law firms against state and federal regulatory inquiries, civil investigative demands, and consumer lawsuits.
