What Credit Union Leaders Should Be Watching Heading into 2027

Economic uncertainty, rising delinquencies, evolving member expectations and the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence are creating new challenges—and opportunities—for credit unions. At a recent Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal roundtable, Bassford Remele shareholder and Consumer Finance Practice Group Co-Chair Patrick Newman joined Minnesota credit union leaders to discuss how institutions can prepare for what lies ahead.

Patrick pointed to increasing delinquency rates and the prospect of more consumer bankruptcies, defaults and related litigation. He encouraged credit unions to respond proactively by reviewing their compliance practices, credit-reporting procedures and protocols for difficult member conversations. Clear, consistent standards, he noted, can protect both the institution and its members without compromising a member-centric approach.

Relationships remain equally important. As financial services become more automated and consumers have more options, a high-touch approach can help credit unions preserve trust and loyalty. Patrick observed that empathy and strong member relationships can serve as a meaningful risk-management tool, particularly when an institution must address a dispute, delinquency or other difficult issue.

The panel also explored AI’s role in the workplace. Patrick’s guiding principle: “augment, not replace.” Used thoughtfully, AI can streamline routine work and give employees more time for the judgment, service and human connection that remain essential throughout a credit union—from member services to the C-suite.

Looking toward 2027, Patrick offered a cautious “yellow light” outlook. He expects continued pressure from litigation involving the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act and Telephone Consumer Protection Act, placing greater demands on legal, compliance and special-assets teams. Credit unions that prepare now—with defensible policies, disciplined processes and a continued commitment to members—will be better positioned to navigate that environment.
