Troy Gunderman

Consumer finance litigator brings more than two decades of in-house litigation leadership and nationwide defense experience to the firm

Bassford Remele is pleased to announce that Troy Gunderman has joined the firm as Counsel in its Consumer Finance practice group.

Troy is a seasoned litigator who guides companies through all phases of litigation, from pre-suit resolution and early case assessment through trial and appeal. He brings more than two decades of litigation experience, including significant in-house leadership overseeing high-stakes and high-volume matters across the country.

Troy’s practice focuses on defending consumer finance and consumer protection claims, including matters arising under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Telephone Consumer Protection Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, California Invasion of Privacy Act, and other federal and state consumer protection statutes and regulations. He has handled matters involving consumer, collections, bankruptcy, and employment issues, with experience spanning individual claims, class actions, dispositive motion practice, mediation and settlement, trial, and appeal.

Before joining Bassford Remele, Troy served as Director of Litigation at Educational Credit Management Corporation, where he managed nationwide defense efforts, developed and executed litigation strategy, directed internal legal teams, and coordinated local counsel. His experience gives him a practical understanding of how litigation strategy, risk management, and business objectives intersect for clients operating in highly regulated environments.

“Troy brings deep consumer finance litigation experience and a practical, business-focused perspective shaped by years of in-house leadership,” said Jessica Klander, President at Bassford Remele. “His ability to manage complex litigation strategy across jurisdictions will be a strong asset to our clients and to our growing Consumer Finance team.”

Troy’s appellate work across multiple federal circuits has helped shape key issues involving the FDCPA’s fiduciary exception, preemption, no private right of action, bankruptcy court jurisdiction, and standards governing the discharge of federal student loans. He is admitted to practice in Minnesota, the U.S. Supreme Court, multiple U.S. Courts of Appeals, and several U.S. District Courts.

Troy earned his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law and his B.A. from the University of St. Thomas.
