Overview
Kate Baker is a dedicated attorney focusing on health care law; and her commitment to the field is driven by her profound personal experiences and passion for medicine. Leading up to the loss of her daughter, Elodie, of a complication of her heart transplant, Kate spent nearly two years in a pediatric cardiovascular care unit. This journey provided her with invaluable insights into the complexities of the health care system and the experiences of patients, families, and medical providers.
In her legal practice, Kate is passionate about supporting health care institutions and professionals. She offers comprehensive legal representation in several key areas, including:
- Risk Management and Claim Prevention
- Health Care Information, Privacy, and HIPAA Compliance
- Credentialing and Medical Staff Matters
- Federal and State Abuse and Fraud Laws
- Guardianships
- Mental Health Issues (including 72-hour holds and involuntary hospitalization)
- Provider and Facility Licensing
- EMTALA Risk Management and Litigation
- Civil and Administrative Litigation
Kate has successfully tried many medical malpractice cases to verdict. Her extensive trial experience, coupled with her successful motion practice, makes her an asset to any medical professional facing legal action.
Kate has received several accolades for her work: she has been named to the Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch, included in the Minnesota Monthly Top Lawyers list, and recognized on the Minnesota Rising Stars list. Before joining private practice, she clerked for the Honorable Denise Reilly at the Minnesota Court of Appeals and externed for United States Magistrate Judge Becky Thorson
Outside of her legal practice, Kate is committed to making a positive impact. She maintains a large cut-flower garden to support local pollinators, advocates for organ, blood, and tissue donation, and believes in shared responsibility to improve the world.
Kate’s unique combination of personal experience and professional acumen allows her to approach health care law with empathy and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by both providers and patients in the health care system.
